The Importance Of A Good Squeeze Page

Squeeze pages seem to be taking the net by storm these days. They are designed to maximize the effectiveness of your online advertising. A squeeze page is a webpage that, when the visitor "lands" on it, he is asked to opt-in to some type of list in order to proceed further. Squeeze pages are designed to obtain a reader's name and e-mail address information by encouraging users to opt-in to an e-mail list to receive more information about the topic.

A squeeze page, generally, has some enticing bullets on it, and does a thorough job of describing what you'll be able to access after you enter your data. Squeeze Pages and One Time Offer (OTO) pages are essential for all top marketers

To make an effective name squeeze page, you want to provide information that interests your readers and makes them want to be directed to more information, or to receive information via email. These names and email addresses that your name squeeze page collects can be added to your mailing list. A well written squeeze page can lead to more leads and consequently more sales. Also the addition of audio in conjunction with text can result in a more effective squeeze page.

List

We all know that list building is the key. The most effective kind of web page you could promote that will build your list the fastest is a squeeze page. Internet marketers are using squeeze pages on a regular basis to build massive opt-in lists.

Listbuilding is one area where size really does matter, the bigger your list, the bigger your income. List building is very important for every online business and a squeeze page is one of the best tools you can use to quickly convert visitors into subscribers. The effectiveness in which you build your list will depend on the landing page that receives your traffic.

Without leads, sales cannot be made but getting good leads these days can be hard work unless you know how to use a squeeze page. Squeeze pages don't have to be difficult to create.

Many long-term Internet marketers have learned that building a giant email list of hungry subscribers is actually the best and quickest way of generating a huge cash flow with the least amount of time and effort, and they have also learned that they can cut down on that effort and build their lists even faster using squeeze pages. I'm sure you've noticed by now how a few of the "guru" marketers online have designed their site index pages to contain nothing more than enough information to get you excited about some product they're selling, and then there is nothing left to do except sign-up to a special list if you want to learn more.

The rationale behind using a squeeze page is that most Internet marketers realize that the vast majority of visitor will not buy from a site on the first visit. So if you are serious about building your list and and making money from affiliate marketing, the sooner you start building your list, the faster it will happen.

Imagine making a single modification to your site and turning it into the ultimate salesman and list generator. Using a simple method I've been able to create several squeeze pages which manage to boost sales of my affiliate products. If lead generation is important to your business, you need to get your squeeze pages up and working for you as soon as possible.

If you'd like to see one of the best and the most effective squeeze page software that I personally use and with great success, and if you can point and click, I promise that you can create your own list-building, highly-converting, money-pulling squeeze page,in less than 5 minutes... check out "Your Squeeze Page 3.0 from the link below.

For printing companies to survive and make a permanent mark in this complicated and continually evolving industry, they do not need magic tricks and special powers in order to do so. Having the most modern of modern machines and a large number of staff does not also guarantee success. The technique is only boiled down to three things:

This simply means that they are selling more and have more customers and orders. Economics state that being busy is always equal to more results. So these printers try to do more work and production and lessening the problems that may hinder that cause.

Being both work effective and cost efficient. It does not matter how small or insignificant the work is as long as it comes in big numbers. What matters is the profit it will give in the end. Big profits. Doing the work properly and meeting the standards required should also be considered first before the bulks. Consulting Reviews When Considering The Switch To VoIP

Making a long distance phone call used to mean using your land phone line to dial through a long distance carrier that charged you often-exorbitant by-the-minute fees, because there was no competition to keep the prices reasonable. Then came the mobile phone, and that gave consumers another option when it came to calling far away. But, as we all know, mobile phones do not always work, often drop calls, and tend to have sporadic reception. A new trend in phone calling is gaining popularity. VOIP, or Voice Over Internet Protocol, is not a new technology. It has been used for years in the business world. Fairly recently, it has seen a surge in popularity of use by the average consumer due to its many appealing attributes, namely its ease of use, available calling features, and low pricing. VOIP works by converting analog audio signals into digital data, which can be dispatched over an Internet connection. VOIP can make your Internet your home computer the best place to make your long-distance phone calls - nearly free of charge. You use VOIP devices and software that are widely available; therefore the phone company is sidestepped. There are many reviews widely available that you can consult regarding VOIP, VOIP devices, VOIP phones, and VOIP services. Consult these reviews to get as much information you can about the vast quantity of products and services available.

There are several benefits to using VOIP for making your phone calls. Chief among them is the flexibility you have with the service. If you are a business traveler, you know that your mobile phone is not always a reliable source of communication, because of lack of service or technical difficulties. With VOIP you have the ability to take your phone and your phone number anywhere you go and use it to place calls as long as there is an Internet connection available. The next principal benefit to VOIP is price. VOIP services have the ability to offer local and long distance phone service, as well as many common phone features at extremely low monthly prices. It is becoming clear that traditional phone companies cannot compete. The "extras" that phone companies charge high monthly fees for, such as Caller ID or Call Waiting, are often standard features with VOIP services.

Another benefit of VOIP is the outstanding features that are available to you. You can check your voice mail via the Internet. You can have your voice mail sent to you as email messages. You can make customized voice mail messages for specific callers. These are but a few of the available features. These are services that a traditional phone company just can't offer, especially at low monthly rates. If you are interested in learning more about VOIP features and services, consult online VOIP reviews to get a thorough rundown of services, features, and pricing, to make sure you get the best deal out there.

There are three primary VOIP devices available that you can opt to use to place phone calls from your computer. They are all relatively easy to use, meaning that you don't have to be an expert computer user, and they cost very little, if anything at all. The ATA, or Analog Telephone Adapter, lets you connect your home telephone to your computer. It converts the analog signal to digital simply by plugging your phone cord into the device. The IP, or Internet Protocol, phone is another VOIP device currently in use. It looks like your standard home telephone, but is equipped with Ethernet wiring to make it VOIP capable. The IP phone simply connects to your computer's router, and you are ready to make calls. Computer-to-computer is the last method of implementing VOIP. If your computer has an Internet connection, PC speakers, a sound card, and a microphone, you have the capability to download available software and make free long distance phone calls from your computer. The software is often very inexpensive, sometimes even free of charge. If you want to know more about VOIP devices, or are not sure which route to go, there are many VOIP reviews online that will explain them completely, as well as provide assessments on VOIP telephone that you can buy to help make the use of VOIP even easier for you. VOIP is an efficient and cost-sensible way to make long distance telephone calls to friends and family members that live far away.

Strategies to Maximize the Life of Your Mac Hard Drive

Maximize the life of your Mac hard drive

Although Macs are often deemed the most user-friendly computers, many Mac users do not know much about computer maintenance. This is because Mac OS cleverly hides all the cumbersome applications it runs to keep the system secure and healthy. Unfortunately, while this maintains Apple’s signature look and feel, it also takes away the user’s ability to easily monitor and maintain the health of their computer.

Below, I recommend several procedures that can be performed by most Mac users without much difficulty, which will help safeguard your computer from data loss.

Be SMART, Monitor your hard drives

SMART stands for Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology and allows you to run diagnostics on your hard drive to determine if a failure is imminent. In order to run the tool, launch Disk Utility (Applications: Utilities) and click on the top level indicator for your drive in the left-hand column. In the bottom of the window, you should see something like “SMART Status: Verified”. If you do not see “SMART status” at all, your Mac does not support the technology. If you see “SMART status” but do not see “Verified”, your drive may be at risk of imminent failure. In this case, your best bet is to backup your data and replace the drive. This simple, but often overlooked procedure may save you from losing your data. One other thing worth noting is that although there is a myriad of 3rd party applications that can run these diagnostics automatically, be advised that using such utilities in the event of a hardware failure can cause extensive damage to the drive.

    Clean up files

This is pretty self-explanatory and is applicable to all computer users – take some time to organize your files on a regular basis. Clean up any downloads or files from your desktop and place the files into appropriate folders. This will not only save time, but will also protect you from losing files due to bad sectors.

    UNIX Maintenance Scripts

Mac OS uses automatic maintenance routines called maintenance scripts to clean up system log files and other temporary files. The three scripts are designed to run daily, weekly and monthly. The problem is that these scripts are set by default to run late at night when most Macs are either off or sleeping. If the computer is off or in sleep mode during this time, the scripts will not run and the log files will grow in size, clogging up the startup disk and slowing down performance. The good news is there are a number of 3rd party programs that exist that allow the user to set different times at which to run the scripts, including MacJanitor (v.1.3 or later for Tiger) and Anacron among others. I will be reviewing these software suites in the coming articles so do check back often and sign up for our newsletter!

    How Blogging Affects Mainstream Marketing

There has been a lot of buzz around blogging lately, and for good reason. Weblogs, or blogs for short, are changing the way people market themselves and their businesses.

If you aren't familiar with blogging, the concept is relatively easy to grasp. Blogs first began as a shared online journal. A blogger posted diary-like entries about his or her daily life for others to read.

Recently though, blogging has evolved into a new form of business writing and advertising. Many business owners now use blogs to promote their goods and services. Others use blogs to promote their website and get higher search engine rankings. Some politicians even use blogs to reach voters.

The typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media that is somehow related to the blog topic. Though most blogs focus on textual contant, a blogger may include videos, pictures, and even audio in blog posts. A blog comprised of videos is called a vlog and a blog that uses pictures is called a photoblog.

    The Benefits of Blogging

By adding blogging to their marketing campaigns, business owners are able to market their product with virtually no out of pocket expense. In some cases, bloggers may even be able to make large sums of money with their published blog. For example, a blogger who employs the Google Ad Sense program can make money from blog readers. The more readers a blogger has, the more money can be made from the Google ad.

A blogger can also be a guide for shoppers who are looking for specific products and services. This makes blogging an excellent tool for retailers or affiliate marketers. Blogs can also be a source of valuable information and niche industry news.

Because there are virtually limitless possibilities provided by blogging, it is easy to see why blogs have begun to have a significant impact on mainstream marketing practices. Many companies have noticed this and have chosen to hire a blogger to write and post up to date information for customers, shareholders, and employees.

Some blogs now get millions of readers every single day. There are so many blog readers out there, that experts speculate that the world of blogging is rivaling the mainstream media. New blog search engines are also being created to make searching for a blog easier than ever before.

If you have not yet established a blog for your business, you may want to consider doing so as soon as possible. Keep in mind though that it will take work to attract readers to your blog. It must be interesting or valuable to them in some way. A blogger must also concentrate on creating informative pieces that are as honest and up to date as possible. Blogging is serious business and if you make a mistake, it will not go unnoticed by your readership.

If you need help developing your blog, there are many different browser-based software programs on the market that can help you get a start. Blogs can also be hosted by dedicated blogging services or regular web hosting services.

Last, but not least, a blogger must remember to optimize blog writing for search engines. Blogging is an Internet medium and needs to be approached with Internet principles in mind.

    Blogging Example

A typical blog entry includes a title or headline, a body of text, a permalink or URL for another web page, and a post date, which indicates the date and time that the post was published. A blogger may also choose to include a link at the bottom to allow readers to post comments on the blog.

Link Popularity - Your Key to a Page #1 Listing

Last week I was doing a search in Google under 'ezine advertising' and was amazed to find one of my own websites on the first page of results (position #4 out of 271,000).

So then I went to Yahoo and got another shock - there it was again at position #4 out of 274,000 results.

If you're wondering how I did it, the answer is I'm not entirely sure.

But my guess is *link popularity*.

    What is link popularity?

Some years ago the major search engines realized that the best way to decide if your website has valuable content (and is therefore worth a high ranking) is to see how many other websites link to your site.

Link popularity was pioneered by Google but has now become a key factor in the algorithms used by most of the major search engines.

Would you like to know your current link popularity?

Here's a free tool that will check your link popularity in Alltheweb, AltaVista, AOL, Google, HotBot and MSN. This tool will also compare your link popularity with your competitors': http://www.marketleap.com/publinkpop/

Now that you know your link popularity, you may be wondering how you can increase it.

Here are some commonly used strategies - some effective and some not:

    ==> FFA Sites

Free For All sites are websites that collect your email address (and send you a lot of junk email) and in return allow you to post a link on a website.

FFA sites are rather like a conveyor belt - new links are constantly being added and old links being pushed off. On Many FFA sites your link will last an hour or two at the most.

Even if your link stayed on an FFA site long enough to be indexed by a search engine, it is unlikely it would increase your link popularity. Search engines regard FFA sites as spam and they'll either ignore your link or penalize your site.

    ==> Link Exchange Programs

As with FFA sites, you need to ask yourself the same question the search engines ask.

Did someone link to your site because you have valuable content? Or did they link to your site as part of a mutual ploy to artificially raise each other's link popularity?

The search engines know how to tell the difference and some of them (Google for example) will actually ban your site for engaging in 'link farming'.

Another problem with this method is *link relevancy*. If the sites linking to you have content that is not related to your content, the search engines will not give much weight to those links.

==> Reciprocal Links with Individual Webmasters

This will definitely increase your link popularity, especially if you seek out link partners whose websites share the same theme as yours.

But this approach is time consuming - first you have to surf around looking for potential link partners, then you have to email them, then you have to confirm that they added your link and so on.

    ==> Writing Articles

This is the technique I use for increasing link popularity and it works very well.

Write short articles of 300 - 800 words and then submit them to the article announcement lists and the online article banks.

There are thousands of webmasters out there who need free content for their websites and you'll soon find your articles appearing on dozens, even hundreds, of different websites.

At the bottom of your article is your Resource Box containing a link to your website. It might look something like this:

John Doe is the webmaster of yourdomain.com where he
offers cutting-edge tips on all aspects of web marketing.
To find more advice, tools and resources to help you
succeed in online business, visit: http://www.yourdomain.com

Most webmasters will make the URL in your Resource Box an active link. If they don't, you should insist on it because it's part of the deal - they get free content for their website and you get a free link.

This technique has two important advantages over other methods of raising link popularity:

    1. You don't have to clutter up your website with reciprocal links
    2. You don't have to invest huge amounts of time searching for link partners and then emailing them to request a link. If they like your article, they just add it to their website.

    Happy writing!

    Contest Advice for Screenplay Writers

    Introduction

There are many screenplay contests available to the aspiring screenwriter. These contests can be a good avenue to getting one's work noticed and/or make a sale. So, it's important to make certain that you have written your screenplay to the best of your ability and according to industry standards.

The most important thing to do for any aspiring screenwriter is to first learn the basic techniques of screenwriting before sitting down to write one. I come across many hopeful writers who think that all it takes to write a script is a good story idea and a lot of explosive special effects. While a good story is important, with or without the special effects, writing that story using proper industry standards is equally important. (Please visit http://www.coverscript.com/education.html -- Tips for Screenwriters link for further information.)

There are specific techniques to the craft of screenwriting involving everything from act structure to proper screenplay format, which must be followed. It's difficult to write engaging characters, focused plots and entertaining screenplays without having a solid framework in which to bring it all to life.

Before any money is spent submitting your work to a screenwriting contest, it would behoove the writer to first educate himself in the "tools of the trade". There are many, many screenwriting books available as well as workshops and seminars, both online and in live classroom situations. My advice is to take advantage of them. Then, armed with the basics, write, write and then write some more.

Then before submitting your work to any screenplay competition have it copyrighted and WGA registered. (United States Copyright office: http://www.loc.gov/copyright. Writers Guild of America: http://www.wga.org/.)

    Advice and Suggestions

I am a judge for many contests and as such, have read thousands of TV scripts and screenplays. I can assure you that the winners are chosen because their screenplays or TV scripts contain great stories and are written to industry standards. Therefore, putting your best foot forward is a must. Below are some pointers to keep in mind before you submit your screenplay.

If your purpose is to "break into the business", make certain that the script contest you enter offers meetings with agents and/or producers as part of the prize for winning and not just cash prizes. Of course, if it is just the extra cash you're after, then go for it!

Make certain, before you write that entry fee check and send in your material, that the screenplay contest or TV script competition is a reputable one and indeed has, in the past, delivered to its winners what it promised in its promotion.

Presentation of your screenplay does count so make certain your screenplay follows the accepted industry standards. This not only includes using the proper screenplay format but also such things as a typo-free screenplay and the correct binding.

Keep in mind that the industry professionals who sponsor some of these film and TV competitions do so in order to find good producible material, hopefully for lower rather than higher budgets. Therefore, entering a screenplay in a genre with a story that screams "high budget" lessens the writer's chances of winning. This means that
Sci-fi special effects stories taking place on purple planets populated with giant, paisley-skinned, seven-armed, Plasmanian Wooglegorps who magically float through the air using anti-gravity belts or
a 1920's Period Piece necessitating Model-T's, Zoot suits and flappers or
an action/adventure story that has the bad guys blown to smithereens, along with their Lear jet, over the ocean, followed by a high-tech nuclear submarine underwater search and rescue mission while the oil slicked water burns out of control, may not be the best way to go.

Make certain that your story is told visually. Film is a visual medium.

Make sure you don't have "on the nose" dialogue or too much dialogue and that all the dialogue sounds natural.

Check to make sure that your characters are interesting, engaging and have good character arcs. Nothing worse than having an unlikable hero, a wishy-washy bad guy, or a protagonist who starts out angry at the world and by the end of the story is still angry at the world having learned and changed nothing in his nature.
    Conclusion

Once you've gone through your screenplay and are satisfied with it, have it read by someone else. After all, your story is intended for a movie-going audience so honest opinions from friends and family members will give you a feel for that audience reaction.

Then do yourself a favor and have your screenplay read by an industry professional that has experience and good credentials in the area of script analysis. A writer can become too close to his work and not be able to "see the forest for the trees". It is to your advantage to have any possible format, story, character, dialogue and structure flaws found and corrected before it is submitted to a movie or TV script contest.

While there is never any guarantee your screenplay or TV script will be a winner, writing one to the best of your ability and which meets industry standards is a must, as the competition is fierce.

I wish you great success in your present and future story-telling adventures.

Search Engines And Directories - Understanding The Difference

One thing that is so basic that it often still needs to clarified is the concept that a search engine and a search directory (article directory) are not the same thing. The traditional search engines add Web site pages to their databases automatically and then rank them in popularity in their search engine rankings based on user submissions. However, these search engines also periodically send their automatic robots or "spiders" out to "crawl" for new and updated information on websites that can also be indexed and added to the search engine rankings. Complex algorithms (that are comparable to the mysterious complex FICO Scores that are used to calculate your credit rating) calculate your web page’s popularity on a number of different factor. The most famous example of a pure search engine like this is Google

Directories also qualify as a search site but they are not the same as a search engine. To get listed on a directory, you must actually submit your front page URL on the directory's submission form. Also instead of being evaluated by an algorithm, these pages are directly assessed by a human being. This means that your site is ranked according to the information that you submitted on your application. This is very different from a typical search engine that assesses your web ranking according to what is actually on the home page of your web site. The Open Directory, Yahoo and LookSmart are the main Internet directories that are managed in this way.

To make things even more difficult the search sites and the search engines work in cahoots together to boost each other’s rankings. Almost all of the major search engines also work in tandem with a directory which is why, for instance, a listing in DMOZ almost automatically guarantees you a place on Google.

7 Reasons To Publish An Ezine

    1. Publish A Free Ezine For Selling Products

You could publish a free ezine or newsletter to promote your own or affiliate products, MLMs, etc. This is the most common format, and to work well requires quality — preferably original — content related to your business and products so that it stands out from the crowd.

    2. Publish Free Ezine For Selling Advertising Space

You could publish a free ezine or newsletter to sell advertising spots and exclusive mailings to other businesses. Similar in format to the previous example, except that instead of using the ezine as a vehicle for promoting your own products, you use it to generate ad revenue. This approach is often favored by those new online and / or without their own product, using mainly contributed articles for content and combining the promotion of affiliate programs with ad sales.

    3. Publish A Paid Subscription Ezine

You could charge a monthly or yearly subscription to your ezine or newsletter. Unless your annual subscription is fee is relatively little, you will probably make more money with a low monthly fee automatically charged to the subscriber’s credit card. Note that you need quality, highly targeted original to be successful selling ezine subscriptions like this.

    4. Publish A Free Ezine As A Lead-In To One With More Value

You could publish a free ezine or newsletter as a “lite” version of paid subscription ezine that offers higher value content. You would simply provide a taste of each piece of content in your free ezine, with “full version” articles of greater depth that provide more details and specialized information, 100% original content, secrets of the trade, etc., available with a paid subscription.

Another variant on this model would be to charge a small subscription fee for an ad-free version of your publication. Some people don’t want to get advertisements in every issue and are willing to pay to get rid off them. Free subscribers would get ads and paid subscribers wouldn’t.

    5. Publish A Free Ezine And Charge For The Archives

Yet another way to make money with an ezine is to charge a one time fee for lifetime access to your ezine archives. Obviously, for this to work you’ll need to have plenty of issues archived already, offering substantially original and/ or unique content. They also need to be searchable, which isn’t difficult these days using Google, or at the very least indexed by topic.

    6. Publish A Free Ezine And Sell Reprint Rights

You could publish a free ezine or newsletter that has original content and promotes various related affiliate products. You could then package it up into a set with graphics and a sales page and sell it or charge people a subscription fee to reprint each issue and use it as their own ezine. They would just have to change the titles, contact info and affiliate link codes.

In a different twist, you could promote your own products in the ezine and give it away to your own affiliates as a promotional tool. Alternatively, you could still give away your ezine with free reprint rights, but require that certain links to your website or affiliate promotions are maintained for a semi-viral effect.

    7. Publish A Free Ezine And Sell A Print Edition

You could publish a free ezine or newsletter and charge for a subscription for a print edition delivered every month. Put additional premium content in the print edition, similar to how you would do a subscription ezine. The added benefit of a doing a tangible print version is that you can charge more for it because the perceived value is higher, plus you can make a little extra on the shipping charges too.

Blogging For SEO: How To Get Maximum Search Benefit From Your Small Business Blog

If you have a small business blog, or are thinking of starting one, you should be aware of the ways you can use your blog to drive traffic to your Website. It's simpler than you think.

The first thing to understand about your blog is that each entry is counted as one Web page. Even if you have your blog set to display 10 blog posts on the same page, each of them is counted as a separate Web page by the search engines. That's why it is important to treat each blog entry as an SEO tool. The following tips should be kept in mind for each blog entry in order to optimize them for the search engines and drive more traffic to your Website from your blog:

    1. Optimize each blog post around a single keyword
    2. Make sure your keyword is in your blog post title, preferably at the beginning
    3. Use subheads with or tags that also use your keyword
    4. Include 1-3 keyword links (anchor text) in your blog posts
    5. Sign every blog post with a signature link that uses your keyword
    6. Use bold and italics effectively to emphasize certain keywords and phrases
    7. Be sure to ping the directories
    8. Include tags for all of your blog entries
    9. Use categories effectively
    10. Make links appear natural by linking to internal pages of your Website

Because each blog entry is a separate Web page, the search engines will crawl them and index them just as they do your Web pages. Optimize each one heavily around a specific keyword related to your Website and that's an extra doorway into your Website for each page indexed at the search engines. Also, by adding anchor text to a couple of those keywords and pointing those links to relevant internal Web pages of your Website you are improving the SEO effect of your blog entry. A poll of top SEO experts by SEOmoz revealed that a majority of those SEO experts said these type of keyword links are among the top 10 most important SEO factors for ranking Web pages. Don't give up on keywords and anchor text.

You'll also want to include keyword tags with each blog entry. Those tags will be used by the search engines to index your pages appropriately for your keywords. Also, social bookmarkers will find it easier to tag your blog entry if they like it and this makes it easier to share among their social group.

Your blog category should indicate an important element of interest as well. Unlike tags, you should only choose one category for each blog post. Don't use "main" or "uncategorized." Those are too generic. Use a specific keyword-related category as that will make your blog posts more crawlable by the search engines.

There are more than 100 blog directories that you can ping to let them know you have updated your blog. I suggest you do this every time you update your blog. With WordPress, and several other blogging software platforms, you can input each directory into a field and the software will send out an automatic ping each time you update your blog. If you are not using WordPress you should go to Ping-o-Matic and use it to ping your blog for free.

Finally, if you sign your blog posts with a keyword-rich signature that points to a relevant internal page of your Website, this will make your Website more crawlable and give you another anchor text link. Use something like, "Find Out More About Keyword." Then add another link that points to your home page.

The important thing to remember about keywords and links, whether on your blog or your Website, is to make them appear natural. The benefits are enormous.

Search Engine Optimization And The Magic Fairy Dust

There is only one thing that all webmasters agree upon... They all want to be at the top of the search engine results for search terms that will drive traffic and consumers to their website.

The truth is that the search engines are like our childhood game of King Of The Hill. Only one person can be at the top of the hill and the top of the search results. Only ten websites can be on page one of the search results. When a new website moves into the top ten, another must be removed.

For any given search term at any given time, there are only ten web pages on page one of the search results, and there are millions of web pages that did not make page one, who may or may not catch a few stragglers from the search engines.

How Can A Website Break Into The Top Ten?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is an industry that has sprung up around the concept of helping their clients improve their rankings in the search engine results.

When you talk to SEO professionals, they generally point to a two-pronged approach to search ranking optimization. A website owner needs to optimize their on-site real estate for the search engines, and they need to build inbound links to their website.

    On-Site Search Optimization Challenges

The trick with on-site search optimization is that you must cater to multiple audiences on your website.

    * You must provide simple navigation and an attractive interface to the human visitor;

    * You must provide good sales copy to your human visitors, for the purpose of converting them from shoppers to buyers;

    * You must provide text copy for the search engines to read; and

    * You must optimize your content to help the search engines know what topics and keywords they should pay attention, so that they can give their users the right web page for the right search terms.

A web page that draws good search rankings is useless if the web page cannot convert the human visitor to a buyer. Many website owners get caught up in the process of optimizing a web page to get it to the top of the search results, and they forget that the human visitor knows where the Back Button is in his or her browser. Once your visitor has hit the Back Button, they will go to someone else's website and buy from them, instead of you.

Most website owners have the alternate problem. They consistently convert a significant number of visitors to buyers, but they have to rely on various forms of paid advertising to get visitors to their websites, since they do not rank in the search engines.

I recently spoke with an individual who spends ,000 per month on pay-per-click advertising to get targeted traffic to his website. He said he consistently earns back his money, but he was still looking for a better way to get ranked in the search engines, so he joined my client list.

    On-Site Search Engine Optimization Basics

According to the search engine companies, there are more than one thousand calculations that determine how well a website will rank in their search engine result pages (SERPs).

The Google engineers are fond of saying that if you build your website for human beings instead of search engines, then your website should rank well in their algorithms. To a certain degree, this is a good strategy.

Think about how magazines are constructed:

The Table Of Contents shows story titles, brief descriptions, and page numbers telling you where you can find a story.

On the story page, the title will be in big, bold font. Sometimes, the magazine will include a brief blurb about the story, in italics or font that is a bit bigger than the story font.

Pictures support the story with captions that further develop the story, by describing the picture.

Major subsections of the story have their own subheadings. And, the primary body of the story is in regular plain text, with only an occasional bolded or italicized word or phrase.

By analyzing the title and other large text on the page, a person who is flipping through the pages of a magazine can quickly assess the story content and make the decision as to whether they want to read the full story.

In the most simplistic way, this is how the search engines analyze a websites' content to decide which web page will best serve their users' needs.

Off-Site Search Engine Marketing (SEM) Basics

Since the inception of Google, and with Yahoo and MSN recently, the number and quality of links pointing to a website play a significant role in determining how well a web page will rank in the search results.

I have heard people suggest that as much as 75% of the value given to a web page in the search results is based solely on the number and quality of links pointing to a web page. I tend to believe a more conservative number (50.1%) will apply.

Inbound Links Are More Important Than Page Content

To prove this point, type "click here" without the quotes into Google, Yahoo and MSN and check the Adobe pages that come up in the search results: #1 in Google, #2 in Yahoo, and #1 in MSN. When you pull up those pages, search the page to find the individual words "click" or "here" in the text of those pages. They are not there. This has happened because millions of people have linked to these Adobe pages with the embedded anchor text, "click here".

Next, let's analyze those specific web pages from the perspective of each of the search engines:

    * Google's #1 result - Google PageRank 8. (www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html) Links to this web page: according to Google (31); according to Yahoo (nearly 12 million); according to MSN (6,400).

    * Yahoo's #2 result - Google PageRank 10. (www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer) Links to this web page: Google (15,200); Yahoo (700 thousand); MSN (32).

    * MSN's #1 result - Google PageRank 8. (www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash) Links to this web page: Google (0); Yahoo (2.9 million); MSN (778).

On Google's top result, they show 31 inbound links total for that web page. But, Yahoo claims that there are more than 12 million links to this page. That is a huge difference.

On Yahoo's #2 result, MSN gives 32 links, Google gives 15,000 links, and Yahoo claims it has 700 thousand links! That is another huge difference between the link counts from the search engines.

On MSN's #1 result, MSN shows a strong link count, but still nowhere near Yahoo's 2.9 million links. But, how does a web page with zero links in Google get a PageRank 8?

    What Do These Numbers Mean?

Google has always said that they will never show us all of the links that we have pointing to our websites, because anything we can see in the public search results, our competitors can see also. So, for me it really is no surprise that we cannot see all of the links that point to Adobe pages, or to the links we have created that point to our clients and ourselves, by querying the search engines.

Also, the sheer numbers of inbound links do not rule the roost. Google's #1 result (PR8) is actually shown in Google, before Yahoo's #2 (PR10) result.

The Proof For Link Building Is In The Search Engine Rankings

Recently, a fellow who works as a SEO "professional" told me that be believed my link building system was a sham.

I showed him that on the top 51 keyword phrases we use to market our original commercial website, we had 11 number one results, 31 top five results, 34 top ten results, 47 top thirty results, and 51 top 100 results within the Google search results. Additionally, it was shown that only three of those results competed with fewer than one million search results according to Google, with the remaining 48 pages competing with one million to 533 million pages.

Ole boy tore up Google trying to track how it was possible for me to have accomplished what I claimed. He finally concluded that since Google would not show HIM how I was able to rank so well in their search engine results, then I must have been lying.

According to Yahoo, we have over 12,000 links from third-party websites. According to our site statistics, we received traffic from more than 16,000 unique web pages during 2006. And Google still swears that we only have 42 inbound links to our website!

    Magic Fairy Dust

My nemesis concluded that since HE could not prove through Google how I was successful in getting good search rankings, then I could not have accomplished such results by the methods I claimed.

    Okay, I admit it.

I used the exact same method that Adobe used to get to the top of Google's search engine rankings. I have a pocket full of magic fairy dust. Whenever, I do not like how my websites rank in the search engines, I sprinkle my magic fairy dust on my modem.

If you don't like where you are ranked in the search engines, then I suggest you forego the search engine optimization companies altogether and instead run over to the corner store to get your own magic fairy dust. You might have to shop around a bit, but it is out there.

    Breathtaking Color Power!

Colors convey character, emotion and intention. You are what colors you choose. Thus, your choice of colors should reflect the message or feeling you to hope to convey to the viewer.

Red - Red is hot color. It is an established color of love, urgency, courage, danger, passion, blood, intensity, aggression, and competition. It is best used as an accent color. This color does not usually blend well with greens or purples of the same intensity, so if you use red with these colors, modify the brightness or intensity.

Blue - Blue is a color of peace, tranquility and wisdom. It also conveys honesty, truth, loyalty, power, coolness, health, harmony, and confidence. Blue is a safe choice for most uses, and goes well with the majority colors. Don't use blue if your site is food or drink related, since there are hardly any blue foods and drinks.

Beige and Gray - These are neutral colors. As neutrals, they can be combined with almost any color and still come across well. Both make for very readable backgrounds, but be sure to use glints of bright colors or the site will appear uninteresting. You can also accent beige or gray with dark colors. It will create an illustrious, professional look.

Black - Black entails death, seriousness, solid strength, elegance, sophistication, rebellion, evil, power, and mystery. It can be powerful, aloof and intimidating. However, black is very useful in separating things such as graphic images. Black can make colors explode!

Yellow - Yellow is the brightest of all colors and has the greatest illuminating power. It is a warm and cheerful color. In addition to cheerfulness, yellow can also convey caution, optimism, idealism, cowardice, and imagination. Too much yellow can be an eyesore. Be careful using yellow with greens and purples of the same intensity. It might tone down one or the other.

Green - Green connotes youth, fertility, ecology, nature, health, growth, money, safety, healing, and food. However, to other viewers, it may connote envy, insects, and reptiles. Green can be well suited as a secondary or accent color.

Brown - Brown implies simplicity, earthiness, comfort, durability, and stability. However, like the neutral grays and beiges, a site that is mostly brown can be very dull. However, a site that had a light brown/beige background, a rich brown secondary color, and bright or dark red accents can give the impression of being very professional.

When choosing colors for your web site. Choose wisely because colors have a larger impact on the viewers. To know its impact, try this test: Open your web site and write on a piece of paper as many words and images that you can think of. Now, have another person to do the same. After that, compare your notes. If you made correct color choices, the list should be almost impossible to tell apart.

I'm more enthusiastic about writing however, since you can relay your ideas to someone else. I can only imagine that feeling when I hear a complete stranger talking about my ideas which read on an article somewhere. To relay my message to as many people is the same as touching people with music. Only mine's less harmonic. I try to make up for it with the color I bring with words. And most of the time, it’s more than enough.
